Background
The first Mixed Martial Arts champion of the modern era, This 34 year old Gracie is one
of nine children of which seven who are boys. He began training
Jiu-Jitsu at an early age as a game with his 88 year old father
Helio.
Helio never pushed any of the children to take formal classes until
the wanted to. However, they often went to the Academy in Rio after
school and on weekends.
Royce began to compete in tournaments at the early age of 8 years
old. By the time he reached16 he received his blue belt and in less
than two years was awarded his Black Belt. At the age of 18, Royce
moved to the United States to live with his older brother Rorion.
Together they began teaching private lessons out of their garage
somtimes more than 10 hours per day. Rorion and Royce opened the
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy eleven years ago in Torrance, California.
Today the Gracie Academy in California is one of the largest martial
arts schools in the country.
Prof. Royce was the first Mixed Martial Arts champion of the modern era, winning the first ever UFC - an open weight, no time limit event
that revolutionised the Martial Arts. Today more than 10 years later Royce is fighting professional Mixed Martial Arts in Japan and the USA.
