BGWC Shooto Results
[26th September 2007]

Last weekend saw competition for a local martial arts club on 2 fronts, with members of Beston Gracie West Coast Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competing in Perth, as well as the Australian Champions Cup held in Melbourne.

Local heavyweight, Matt Douthwaite, won a wildcard entry to compete in the national level event on the east coast. The competition saw Matt compete in both, his weight division and the 'absolute' or open weight. The weeks of hard work and dedication paying off with his return to the club after winning a gold and silver medal making Matt the clubs first national champion.

Closer to home 4 other members took part in a Perth Shooto competition to qualify for an Australia vs Japan fight night in November. Luke Delaveris, Tim Fraser, Blake Glossop and Keith Hitchcock fought under the Japanese rules allowing full strikes while standing and continuing to the ground under submission grappling guidelines.

The event, held at the state Muay Thai centre, saw Blake and Luke succumb to skilful opponents by submission in the first round while the club heavyweights both contended their matches over the 6 minute duration with Tim losing an extremely close decision and Keith coming away the victor.

Luke, Blake, Keith & Tim with Coaches Taff & Gav

The local boys represented their club well and are continuing to train hard for the state titles to be held in October.

BGWC, which currently trains from the Rockingham Squash courts, is due to open it's new custom premises, at 2/12 Day Rd, in Nov and will offer BJJ, submission grappling, Boxing, Shooto, women's self defence and Silat, as well as kids martial arts. For further info people can contact Taff on 0417 099 775 or Gavin on 0430 230 441.

More Competition Congrats!

Well done and thanks to the 3 competitors who all trained extremely hard and made a lot of sacrifices in their preparation for this tournament. Thanks and well done also to all the coaches (Ben, Steve, Taff, Gav, Lucozade, Matrat, Simon, Sparkle) and the entire pool of skilled training partners who helped our athletes prepare. Special thanks to Coach Paul "Matrat" who was there on the day to coach the competitors.

[3rd September 2007]

Another fantastic day on the mat for our competitors, fighting as part of Prof. Bruno's Gracie Sydney team. Several milestones in this competition, with 4 kids competing all taking home medals, and all showing some great Jiu Jitsu in the process. Overall the medal count for our Newcastle and Central Coast academies was 4 Gold, 4 Silver, and 3 Bronze out of 15 competitors!

Class times are unchanged at the new location, and our first class at the new location will be Tuesday 2/1/07. Our official "Grand Opening" and a seminar with Prof. Bruno Panno will be announced in the near future.

The new facilities offers increased mat space, ring and heavy bag facilities, showers, and much more.

Students travelling from the Central Coast should:

  1. Take the same Cardiff Exit as before
  2. Drive past the old academy and continue through to the Cardiff Crossroads where you will see the Cardiff RSL (on your right) and Cardiff Toyota (on your left)
  3. At this intersection turn RIGHT onto Munnibung road - the academy is on the far end of this road on your left hand side.
